NZ Day 4 Journal (11/12/16): Leaving Twizel this morning we headed to the Clay Cliffs in Omarama, had an amazing lunch in Cromwell, then it was on to Queenstown for dinner and some rest before tomorrow’s big trek!

Omarama Ahuriri River lupine

The lupine are starting to bloom in Omarama along the Ahuriri River. Although it was overcast today, the colors were still remarkable!

The Clay Cliffs in Omarama are certainly worth the stop and short dirt drive. The erosion of these cliffs exposes fascinating geology, and the view of the Omarama Valley below is stunning.

The veins of rock exposed in the clay cliffs are extraordinary and the easy walk make this a great rest day activity! The Ahuriri River snakes through the valley below.

Armondos Kitchen lasagna Cromwell

We stopped in Cromwell for lunch and had the best lasagna of our lives at Armando’s Kitchen. Who would have thought? Located on the bank of Kawarau River, Cromwell is a fun spot to stop and grab a bite.  Photo credit Clara Kerley.
